The visual component of the piece Orishas was created with a custom code in Processing using a Kinect sensor and a webcam to transform the spatial, color and brightness information of choreographed dancers into a virtual three dimensional mathematical representation of their movements. 28000 images are then imported into a video editing software and treated as a still frame animation. The biggest challenge both in the choreography and the video making process was how to preserve the spirituality of the piece in such a logical setup. The solution was a collective leap of faith, embracing the limitations of the technology and approaching ritual repetitive gestures as the building blocks of a piece that only came to life when I invoked the guidance of the virgins of the Caridad del Cobre and Regla, Ochún and Yemayá, goddesses of all flowing waters. The hours and hours of editing and rendering became a zen-like reflection on my own spirituality and the beauty of layered dance and music.
El componente visual de Orishas fue creado utilizando un código en Processing usando un sensor Kinect y una cámara web para transformar la información espacial, de brillo y de color de unos bailarines coreografiados y transformarla en una representación virtual tridimensional de sus movimientos. 28000 imágenes se importaron en un programa de edición de video y se procesaron como una animación cuadro a cuadro. El mayor reto en la coreografía y en la creación del video fue cómo preservar la espiritualidad de la música y la danza en un marco tan lógico y matemático. La solución fue un salto colectivo de Fe, abrazando las limitaciones de la tecnología y convirtiendo los gestos rituales repetitivos en bloques creativos de una pieza que solo vio la luz cuando invoqué la ayuda de las vírgenes de la Caridad del Cobre y de Regla, Ochún y Yemayá, diosas de todas las aguas. Las horas y horas de edición y rendereo se convirtieron en una reflección zen de mi propia espiritualidad y de la belleza de la danza y de la música mezcladas en capas.LAPTOP/DESKTOP
